Chocolate and Red Wine Chili

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon of oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 pounds of lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup of chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons of cumin
  • 1 teaspoon of oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 (28-ounce) can of crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15-ounce) can of tomato sauce
  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can of beef broth
  • 1/4 cup of Black Box Wine Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 (15-ounce) cans of kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • Shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, and chopped green onions, for serving

Directions:

  • Heat oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 10 minutes.
  • Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned, about 15 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.
  • Stir in chili powder, cumin, oregano, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring well.
  • Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, beef broth, red wine, and cocoa powder. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Stir in kidney beans and cook for another 15 minutes, until chili is thick and bubbly.
  • Serve hot, topped with cheese, sour cream, and green onions, if desired.

This recipe makes about 8 servings. It has a rich and complex flavor from the combination of chocolate, red wine, and spices.

This stuff is so good and my family loves it! 🙂

Cheers!
